Even the world's best orchestras are nothing without their conductor or maestro. World renowned musicians need a leader when they perform in unison with other people. The maestro provides tempo and structure, and guides sections of the orchestra in and out of the performance as required. They are the focal point, through whom all of the energy passes for the duration of the performance. The end is often met with great adulation for the conductor, but they always turn and acknowledge the performance from the players in the orchestra.
