On the Letters page of the January 2010 edition, Mike Wood of Pilkington Group refers to our article (Travel guide, FRM November 2009, p.12), and wonders if designers have forgotten about the role of compartmentation in limiting fire spread.rnWe thank Mr Wood for his interest in our article and agree that compartmentation is a highly effective means of controlling the extent of a fire in a building; indeed, it is a basic pillar in fire safety engineering. However, compartmentation cannot always be achieved while meeting the demands of modern architectural schemes.
