Obituary - Professor Philip Nolan (1947-2014)

A leading world expert in chemical safety and hazards posed by flammable substances, Philip Nolan died suddenly on 6 October at the age of 67. Following his degree in chemical engineering and doctoral research into gamma ray spectroscopy of burning wood, he took up a research fellowship sponsored by the Fire Research Station and then became a technical officer at ICI. In 1974, Philip joined the then South Bank Polytechnic, becoming a principal lecturer in chemical engineering at age 36, and starting a research group in fire and explosion focusing on sprinkler sprays, fire and explosion, and chemical reaction hazards. His efforts with his many PhD students paid dividends - the completion rate was 85% and they achieved international acclaim. He also announced the opening of the chemical reaction hazards centre at the polytechnic and went on to successfully supervise 89 PhDs at London South Bank University (LSBU).
