Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) is warning members of the public not to attack firefighters after two incidents in which crews were attacked while attending emergency calls. Crews attending rubbish fires in the Elemore Lane, Brickgarth, area of Sunderland have been verbally and physically abused on two separate occasions. This included stones and bricks being thrown at crews and culminated in one firefighter being injured during an incident at the site on 9 October. A fire appliance also suffered minor damage during the attack More than 2,000 flights were cancelled after an arson attack at an air traffic control centre in Chicago, USA. The fire broke out on 26 September at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facility in Aurora, Illinois, which handles planes cruising at high altitudes through the air space as well as those just beginning to approach or completing a departure from airports in the Chicago area. Brian Howard, who is an employee at the facility, has been charged with one count of destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities in connection with the fire, which was started in the basement of the site.
