Crossrail is currently the largest infrastructure project underway in Europe. When complete, it will stretch from Reading and Heathrow in the west of London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.The railway will be over 100km in length, with the central section consisting of 42km (21 km twin bore) of new tunnels running under central London. The new underground section is also home to eight new stations (with one more overground at Custom House) and a wide range of associated infrastructure. On completion towards the end of 2018, Crossrail will for the first time deliver a direct connection between all of London's main employment centres, linking Heathrow with Paddington, the West End, the City and Canary Wharf. The new railway will reduce journey times, ease congestion and improve connections.
