HISTORICAL AND heritage buildings across the UK are characterised by a variety of criteria, which often include the following: 1. remote locations 2. combustible materials of construction 3. high content loadings, which are more readily ignitable and combustible than modern equivalents 4. unoccupied outside normal hours of business, or seasonal 5. accessible to the public during the day 6. in environmentally sensitive areas 7. large and complex layouts 8. lack of fire compartmentation and presence of voids throughout the building (routes for hidden fire spread) 9. poor defence against a committed intruder 10. high value (heritage and financial) building ana contents 11. perioas of enhanced risk during events (with any associated decorations, such as Christmas trees) 12. difficult to protect by conventional means
