We've all heard investigators explain, at least in court, that their systematic approach to a fire scene investigation went something like this: "First, I made an external survey of the structure, then moved inside and worked from areas of least damage to areas of greatest damage." That external survey often seems to get short shrift, however. Many investigators claim to do an exterior Evaluating the degree of damage and pinpointing where fire vented from a structure can sometimes tell a great deal about where a fire began. For instance, did the fire vent from both ends of the house, but not the middle, possibly indicating multiple areas of origin? Also, the lowest level where smoke vented from a fire is often, but not always, the level where the fire began.
