The Building Fire Performance Evaluation Methodology

The approach to the analysis of fire risk in buildings outlined in this paper, is the Building Fire Performance Evaluation Methodology (BFPEM) or simply 'The Method' which has been researched at the Centre for Fire Safety Studies, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, (WPI) Massachusetts, USA. The Method has been developed and refined by Professor Robert W Fitzgerald and colleagues from an approach first used in the United States some twenty five years ago with the practical application further developed by Clifford Harvey of Fire Mark Ltd. and formerly chief fire marshal of Boulder, Colorado. In partnership with WPI and Fire Mark Ltd. the Fire Service College has worked over the past two years to put the Method into a British context and to prepare courses to teach the procedure.
