Gustin examines fire extension, collapse hazards, and tactics for confining fires in overhangs, including eaves, mansards, and cornices. He says that the most critical factor of this size-up is determining whether an overhang is structural (an integral part of the roof that cantilevers over the top of exterior walls) or nonstructural (an ornamental feature fastened to an exterior wall at or near the roofline). Overhangs are rarely equipped with fire-stopping; consequently, fire originating or extending into an overhang can spread without interruption through its entire length.
