Rethinking Expectations: The Way Forward for Macroeconomics originated from a 2010 conference organized by Columbia University's Center on Capitalism and Society. The conference honored the 40th anniversary of the publication of the landmark "Phelps volume" (also known as the "Phelps micro-foundations volume"), Microeconomic Foundations of Employment and Inflation Theory (W.W. Norton & Company, 1970). Edited by Edmund S. Phelps, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics, that book is commonly credited with pioneering the currently dominant approach to macroeconomic analysis.
