Northern Finnish Refugees of the Winter War: Settlers to Save Alaska

Early in the winter of 1940, many Finns in the northern part of Finland were being evacuated as Finland's situation grew increasingly dire, which was the case particularly after February of that year. The country rejected the Soviet Union's strict peace demands, and the Soviet Union initiated a large-scale assault at the Karelian Isthmus. Simultaneously to the attack, continuous heavy air bombings wreaked destruction on cities and communities as far as in northern Finland. Because of the great number of people in need of a shelter and a safe area to move to, transporting evacuees to other parts of Finland during the Winter War was a colossal operation.
