Sir, Thessaloniki is a beautiful city, rich in history with magnificent views across the bay to Mount Olympus. The harbour master was a bit narked, therefore, to witness a puff of smoke emitting from my funnel while we lay at anchor in the bay, while tucking into his Sunday lunch.rnReprisal was swift and merciless. The crime sheet left no doubt as to his anger. My puff of smoke caused "heavy air pollution and further caused danger for the public health". The fine of €900 may not be up to French and Spanish standards, but it did not endear me to my ship manager who had to pay up.rnAs a ship's captain, I am fully aware that the general public and their legislators see me as nothing more than a criminal intent on polluting the earth's atmosphere and seas for my own wicked ends. Witness Fairplay, 24 July: 'France targets polluters'.
