According to the author, Standby Vessels (SBVs) may be "the ships no one wants" but they now play a vital role in the oil industry in the wake of the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster, in which 167 rig workers were killed. After this tragedy, the oil industry was forced to accept SBVs - also called emergency response and rescue vessels - including a statutory specification of what the ships should be capable of doing. This book is intended to examine the reality of today's situation, including the required capabilities of SBVs.
