Liquid bulk drives record surge in traffic throughput

Antwerp set a throughput record last year, with the increase largely driven by a strong surge in liquid bulk traffic. Throughput rose 3.5% overall to 190.6M tonnes, but liquid bulks alone jumped 32% year-on-year to 59.71 M tonnes. This highlighted investment by companies in the sector and the port's position as the largest integrated petrochemicals cluster in Europe. Dry bulk volumes fell 26.8% to 13.98M tonnes, which the port attributed to the closure of blast furnaces in its hinterland.
