As reported in Solutions last month, the SMM exhibition in Hamburg was notable for a focus on options for using LNG as a fuel for various ship types. In every case, the choice of main engine was one of the dual-fuel models available from a number of leading engine-makers. Dual-fuel engines have become common in LNG carriers, but for other ship types they are limited to planned projects, none of which has come to fruition. Plans also exist for cargo ships with gas engines only - a far more daring approach, as it means that operators are committing themselves to a gas-powered future.
