An article in the Feb. 2, 2009, issue of Newsweek puts forth a very difficult-to-imagine supposition-perhaps you may have read it. The article, "Silicon Val- ley's Fork in the Road," starts out by asking the question, "Could Silicon Valley become another Detroit?" Now some of you who've been in the technology industry for several years might think this is a totally ridiculous analogy. How could Silicon Valley be compared to the auto industry? After all, the U.S. automakers are in tight financial straits primarily because they designed and produced vehicles that did not address the wants and needs of the driving public. How could this scenario possibly be likened to the technology-driven companies in Silicon Valley that are the world leaders, for example, in the design and development of 45-nm and smaller ultracomplex chips?
