Volkmar Gessner is a retired professor of law and society at the University of Bremen. In 1976, his pathbreaking empirical study based on legal field research in Mexico appeared in German with the prestigious house of Mohr Siebeck. The study in the early seventies looked at the question how conflicts that would in Germany be dealt with in courts under private law in the absence or unavailability of courts were resolved in Mexico.
