Literature on the moral status of other animals nearly always focuses on the moral relevance of their suffering. While I acknowledge the scope and intensity of their suffering and the anthropocentric causes of it, I worry that other animals are portrayed almost exclusively as victims and that we forget the moral relevance of their joy. I don't argue that because they experience joy, like us, they have moral standing. Instead I explore the relevance of joy to moral life more generally and hope that my examples of their joy portray their fuller subjectivity.
