Rachel Carson: Legacy and Challenge

Rachel Carson was a scientist and lover of nature who devoted much of her life to instilling the general reader with a greater awareness and sense of wonder of the sea. She also happened to write a book later in life that, while not about the sea, made her the symbolic leader of the United States' environmental movement. That book, of course, is Silent Spring which has been described variously as an unscientific rant by an overly emotional woman and as a painstakingly researched, paradigm-changing synthesis of research on the hazardous effects of widely used pesticides, including DDT.
