摘要

'Every now and then a reviewer finds he is sorry to have undertaken to review a book that initially looked promising, because he knows that the outcome will probably make everyone unhappy.' These are the words that Fromm uses to open his eighth chapter and I borrow them because, for different reasons, they are aptly suited to the situation in which I find myself in this review. One might reasonably expect these books to explore a nexus of ideas concerning the relationship between human nature, consciousness, and the notion of home. My experience with these books, however, much more than confirms the wisdom contained in the maxim: 'don't judge a book by its cover,' which, in this case, means 'don't judge a book by its title.'
