The shown map section of Central Park comprises the southern part starting from Central Park South, along the continuation of East 59th Street, and going towards the south bank of the great water reservoir at the level of 88th Street. That's just a little more than half of the park. Central Park is a city park, but this map is in the first place a tree map. The key to the symbols has a many as 172 symbols for the various types of trees and bushes. Drawing this map must have been sheer donkey work. Almost every tree, every bush is to be found in this map: ailanthus, various cedars, magnolias, oaks and pines, yellowwoods and yews. Apart from this, the key provides symbols for roads, pathways and steps, unpaved paths, visitors centres and toilets. And of course there is also a symbol for subway entries, even indicating the subway line by the colour. Around the park, the blocks of the New York grid are shown in light brown.
