In the last couple of years, Shanghai has devoted a huge effort to improving its infrastructure. And now all the inconvenience, noise and traffic jams caused by the enormous scale of development have finally paid off. The new airport terminal has been completed; the entire metro network has been substantially expanded; urban open spaces have been improved and worn-out buildings have been given a face-lift. The main reason Shanghai has gone to all this trouble is for the 2010 World Expo: the biggest event the city has ever hosted.
