Cognitive engineering as the development of information spaces

In presenting their conception of the cognitive engineering problem, Dowell and Long (1998) provide a thought provoking and challenging view of the design and development of computer systems and other 'cognitive' artefacts. The current craft approach to the devel- Opment of tools and systems that enable People to work effectively in the abstract World of information and knowledge Needs to be replaced by an engineering Discipline. The central argument that They present is founded on a notion of The 'dualism' of work system and do- Main. On the one hand is a combination Of people (or in more general terms, Agents) and devices that constitute a Cognitive work system.
