Pragmatic Environmentalism: Towards a Rhetoric of Eco-Justice

In Pragmatic Environmentalism, Shane J. Ralston undertakes an important and potentially widely transferable inquiry into how to increase the effectiveness of communication in environmental debates. Drawing from the discipline of communication theory, Ralston seeks to make a practical contribution to advancing environmental action through this focus on rhetoric. The book is underpinned by an examination of the influential works of John Dewey and Aldo Leopold with the intention of 'moving forward by looking back' (p. 115). Ralston examines their philosophical positions on human-nature relations and their contributions to debates on ecological stewardship or anthropocentric control of nature, as well as giving examples taken from key debates of the environmental movement today.
