This textbook provides construction and design professionals with the process of developing commercial and institutional high-performance green buildings in today's marketplace. The author provides a detailed overview of the entire process of green buildings, addressing the theory, history, state of the industry, and best practices in green buildings. The leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) assessment system and topics such as Green Globes and several building assessment systems from other countries are addressed. The textbook also covers the background of high-performance green building design, green building assessment, green building process, and ecological design. The barriers to green building design are often said to be economic. However, high-performance buildings can be made to be cost-effective.rnThe textbook is divided into three parts: green building foundations (Part I), green building systems (Part II), and green building implementation (Part III). The challenge we face in the 21st century is to transition to a new order of things that can be sustained within the limits of natural systems. Each chapter of the book provides a summary and conclusions at the end of the chapter. The book contains 14 chapters and 5 appendices.
