Ecologies of comparison: an ethnography of endangerment in Hong Kong

This is a beautifully written book that weaves rich field research documentation and fine thoughts. Put together, the author Tim Choy offers an ethnography of knowledge practice and cultural political negotiation that underlay the surge of environmentalist activity in Hong Kong in the late 1990s. Choy begins his ethnographic journey from the heart of one of Hong Kong's country parks, where villagers exercised their indigenous land rights to bulldoze a six-hectare tract of land. Local natives had proposed to build a low-density housing complex, but the plan was blocked by a coalition of environmental NGOs, whose most visible representatives were either expatriates or overseas-educated elites.
