Scarred Landscapes: War and Nature in Vichy France

In writing the first environmental history of Vichy France, Chris Pearson proposes "an alternative approach to understanding the history of wartime France" (p. 2). Through a close study of the southeastern corner of France (which includes the southern Alps, extensive forests, the plateau of the Vercors, and the wetlands of the Camargue, in the Rhone river delta) Pearson seeks to show how "nature mattered" in France between 1940 and 1944.
