Nature, Business and Community in North Carolina's Green Swamp

It is a rare pleasure to read an environmental history of one's own home turf. I recall vividly my trips into the piney woods and swamps of the Lower Cape Fear, including a few trips into the Green Swamp, and visits to historical sites mentioned in this book. My eighth grade history teacher, a real inspiration, had us make our own turpentine still and visit a tar kiln. Many characters that appear in this book, business leaders such as Hugh MacRae of Wilmington, have added meaning because I attended church and school with their descendants.
