Military historians have long understood the ways in which the environment shapes warfare, even if few of them would consider themselves environmental historians. Environmental historians, however, have only rarely studied the military or warfare, and a correspondingly small number would call themselves military historians. Charles Closmann and the German Historical Institute deserve credit for assembling this collection of essays that addresses the intersection of war and the environment.
