Enclosing Water: Nature and Political Economy in a Mediterranean Valley, 1796-1916

Stefania Barca came to environmental history via economic history. Her first book, Elettrificare la Puglia (2001), gave scant hint of the direction she takes in this study of the industrialization of a small river valley, the Liri, in southern Italy. The Liri, 120 kilometers in length, rises in the Apennines, splashes down to the plains, and then slithers its stately way to the sea. Like that of most short rivers draining uplands, its flow is very uneven from season to season and year to year.
