In the spring of 1969 Stephanie Mills delivered a devastating commencement address entitled "The Future Is a Cruel Hoax" to her class at Mills College. The source of her anxiety was overpopulation and the concomitant ecological destruction that sheer numbers ensure. "The most humane thing for me to do," declared Mills, "is to have no children at all."
