The past decade has witnessed a sea change in the historical profession. David Igler's The Great Ocean: Pacific Worlds from Captain Cook to the Gold Rush (New York: Oxford University Press, 2013), Matt K. Matsuda's Pacific Worlds: A History of Seas, Peoples, and Cultures (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2012), and a 2006 American Historical Review forum on "Oceans of History" have begun to give the interconnected ecosystems and peoples of the Pacific Ocean region the scholarly attention that they deserve. With the publication of Gregory T. Cushman's Guano and the Opening of the Pacific World: A Global Ecological History, an emergent tendency has become a full-fledged trajectory.
