Adorno on Nature

Despite recent surges of interest, particularly in social and political theory and cultural studies, the work of Frankfurt School critical theorist Theodor Adorno has received relatively little attention in environmental studies: it is often regarded as particularly dense and difficult, even by the standards of twentieth-century continental philosophy, and as pessimistic to the point of being paralyzing. While Deborah Cook's Adorno on Nature does not entirely dispel either of these suspicions-it presents neither an easy-to-read introduction to Adorno nor an easy-to-follow program of action-it nevertheless bolsters the case for Adorno's relevance to ecological thinking. Cook's well-researched and careful analysis compellingly unpacks Adorno on nature, particularly showing how his approach highlights some pitfalls for contemporary environmentalism.
