New Holy Wars: Economic Religion versus Environmental Religion in Contemporary America

Libertarian economist Robert H. Nelson argues that in "the public arena the most important religious debate in the last part of the twentieth century was between economic and environmental religion-the new holy wars" (p. 340). Nelson is not suggesting that the various competing ideologies within the academic discipline of economics and within American environmentalism are like religion. Applying the expansive definition of religion of Protestant theologians such as Paul Tillich and Max Stackhouse, Nelson means quite literally that these ideologies are religions. This claim alone would make this book worth reading, even if you do not share Nelson's metaphysical commitment to free market libertarianism.
