Rainham Marshes is one of the Society's flagship reserves, set beside the Thames amidst the urban hustle and bustle on the Essex / London border. The Marshes are one of the few remaining remnants of medieval grazing marsh in the UK; formerly a firing range for the MoD and since 2000 owned and managed by the RSPB. The reserve opened to the public in 2006 and education has always been of the highest priority in its design and infrastructure. Environmental education started here using two old shipping containers as classrooms out on the reserve. Gates had to be unlocked to allow coaches in for the first intrepid schools who ventured out to see what we had to offer.
