The schools in the study are based in the South Lakes. There was one large secondary school of 675 pupils and one small secondary school of 190 pupils, nine primary schools and one infant school that varied in size from 30-plus to over 200 pupils. Of the ten primary schools, seven had fewer than 65 pupils. Through discussion and the use of a questionnaire, information was collected about the schools to enable a comparison to be made of the way these schools lead for sustainability. The study sought to determine if the methods and nature of the leadership were influenced by the size of the school or the sector and whether the qualities, skills and strengths within a leadership team of a sustainable school were universal or significantly influenced by size and sector.
