This book sets out to answer a series of questions as yet unaddressed in teacher education: How does a garden teach? What is the role of environment and community in teacher education? How does learning to teach in the natural world influence how a student approaches the role of 'teacher'? Addressing these questions to understand the role contact with nature can play in teacher education is not an easy or straightforward task, yet Gaylie confidently - and perhaps bravely - takes up this challenge. Largely aimed at those wishing to use gardens in their teaching, the book is part narrative, part theory and part handbook, structured around three metaphors developed from Gaylie's experience of creating a learning garden at a university campus: 'garden as environment', 'garden as community' and 'garden as transformation'.
