Commission ends March with clampdown on non-compliance

The European Commission rounded off March with several infringement cases against member states for failures in the environmental field, in a bid to catch governments that do not implement EU legislation. Three member states face the prospect of daily fines because the Commission is considering referring them back to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for ignoring earlier rulings against them for failure to comply with EU environmental laws. Greece, Ireland and Portugal were all warned last month to comply finally or risk being fined - and it would not be the first time for Greece.
