Experts give GM oilseed rape the OK

A genetically modified (GM) type of oilseed rape has been declared safe for use in food and feed by a panel of EU food safety experts. This is a positive risk assessment for the member states and the European Commission to consider. Oilseed rape T45, which has been developed to tolerate glufosinate-ammonium herbicides, was said by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on 6 March to pose no risk to human or animal health or the environment. EFSA has approved a new application from Bayer CropScience to import and process oilseed rape T45 and derived products for use in food an feed - but not to cultivate it in the EU.
