New EU research body to focus on climate

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) got the green light from MEPs in Strasbourg this week, with climate research among the first areas due to gain funding. The EIT is a pan-European funding body that aims to boost applied research and help bridge the gap between laboratories and the market place. It will fund research projects through a series of knowledge and innovation communities (KICs) that will link up industry and researchers from at least two different member states.
