Introduction: fighting emissions and climate change main focus

EU and global efforts to combat climate change, particularly through controls on greenhouse gas emissions will remain at the forefront of the environmental agenda throughout 2008. On 23 January the European Commission is due to release critical proposals to revise the EU emissions trading scheme and to increase renewable energy use. Also this month the European Parliament will begin its first reading of the newly emerged proposals on curbing carbon dioxide emissions from passenger cars and vote on a proposal to update the fuel quality directive, notably with new lifecycle limits on CO_2 emissions.
