UK Packaging experts and retailers have slammed as "nonsense" the claims that supermarkets are adding to the taxpayers' burden by not tackling excess packaging. The report from the Local Government Association (see story this issue), claims that excessive food packaging, most of which is non-recyclable, is contributing to the £1.8 billion (€2 billion) councils will spend on EU landfill taxes between 2008 and 2011. Packaging research organisation, Incpen, and the British Retail Consortium (BRC) rubbished the report, criticising it both for its methodology and for its failure to recognise the value of packaging.
