Scotland eyes separate packaging recovery scheme

As part of its bid to achieve a Zero Waste Scotland, the Scottish Government announced last week it was looking into introducing its own packaging producer responsibility regime to bring it up to the level of the rest of the UK.In its 27 June consultation document Safeguarding Scotland's Resources: A Programme for the Efficient Use of Our Materials, the Scottish Government suggested that Scotland should amend the UK's current packaging recovery note (PRN) and packaging waste export recovery note (PERN) system and introduce its own Scottish version: SPRNs and SPERNs.
