After announcing earlier this month that it was considering placing a 5p levy on low-cost reusable bags, Northern Ireland's Department of Environment (DoE) has now said those plans will be delayed until at least January 2015. Initially, the plan was to introduce the tax by April 2014. According to the Northern Irish government, the DoE had agreed to hold off on the second phase of the bag tax to allow more time to prepare for the new charging arrangements. This comes after the publication of a report on the department's plans to extend the current 5p levy on plastic single-use bags to cheap carrier bags to prevent them becoming the new throwaway bag.
