An attempt by the electronics industry to have waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) classified as non-waste to allow exports to developing countries failed during the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention in Geneva last week. Developing countries joined forces to defeat the attempts by the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), backed by the EU, US, Japan and Canada to create loopholes that would allow repairable electronic waste to be exempt from trade controls.
