Greenhouse Gas Emissions Likely to Remain Above Advisable Levels, UNEP Report Says

The gap between the level of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and the level needed to limit the global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels is expanding quickly, according to a report issued Nov. 5 by the UN Environment Program. UNEP's "Emissions Gap Report 2013," produced by more than 70 scientists from 17 countries, shows that even if countries meet their current emission reduction pledges-not a sure thing-worldwide emissions by 2020 are likely to be between eight gigatons and 12 GT of carbon dioxide-equivalent above the pathway most likely to limit warming to 2 C.
