Plastic Film Recycling Tops 1 Billion Pounds in 2011

Recycling of plastic bags, product wraps, and commercial shrink film in 2011 topped 1 billion pounds for the first time, according to a report released Feb. 26 by the American Chemistry Council. Plastic film recycling has increased by 55 percent since 2005, according to the 2011 National Postconsumer Plastic Bag & Film Recycling Report, which was prepared by Moore Recycling Associates Inc. The report linked recycling gains to strong growth in the plastic and composite lumber industry. Recycled plastic films can be used in outdoor decks and fencing, home building products, garden products, crates, pipe, and new film packaging. "Reaching the one billion pound mark is an achievement that plastics makers, recyclers and retailers can be proud of," Steve Russell, vice president of plastics for ACC, said in a statement. "We're continuing to work together to get that number even higher."
