Linde to Pay $10 Million to Settle Cleanup Claims at N.J. Site

Industrial gas company Linde Inc., formerly known as Praxair Inc., will pay $10 million to settle Superfund claims related to contamination at an industrial site in Linden, N.J., under a consent decree filed in federal court. The funds will be used to address releases and threatened releases of hazardous substances, including mercury, arsenic, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls, and volatile organic compounds. The property involved is the 26-acre LCP Chemicals Inc. Superfund site, according to the agreement filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The government alleges the contamination stems from a third party’s operation of a chlor-alkali manufacturing plant on the site that produced mercury-containing byproducts, including hydrogen gas, and Union Carbide Corp.'s operation of a hydrogen gas plant that discharged mercury.
