Massachusetts will enforce strict, new limits on the amount of fluorinated "forever chemicals" allowed in public drinking water, state officials announced Thursday. All drinking water systems must test for six types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and replace or remediate the water if the chemicals are found alone or together at 20 parts per trillion or greater, according to the new rules, which are similar to those proposed in December. The biggest water systems must start testing by January.
