The Ministry of Defence has adopted one of the most ambitious environmental management systems ever for its procurement operations. In 2004, EU Environment Commissioner at the time, Margot Wallstrom, said: "Public procurement can have a considerable impact on sustainable consumption. It is very important that public authorities set an example and procure goods, services and works that do not harm the environment."
